Martin Van Buren National Historic Site

Home of the 8th President of the United States

Lindenwald was the home of Martin Van Buren, the 8th President of the United States and a native son of Kinderhook. Van Buren purchased the 36-room mansion in 1839 and lived here until his death in 1862.

The estate is managed by the National Park Service and offers ranger-guided tours of the mansion during the warmer months. The grounds are open year-round at no charge, with walking paths through the historic landscape.

The site connects to the Luykas Van Alen House via the 1.7-mile Dutch Farming Heritage Trail, making it easy to visit both landmarks on foot or by bike.
